Gombe, Nigeria – North-Eastern University, a private institution in Gombe State, has secured permanent accreditation from the National Universities Commission (NUC) after scoring an exceptional 91.4 percent in its quality assessment exercise.
The milestone was announced by the founder and proprietor of the university, Dr. Sani Jauro Dan Lawan Gombe, during a courtesy visit by the institution’s management team to the Emir of Gombe, Alhaji Dr. Abubakar Shehu Abubakar III, who also serves as the Chancellor of the university.
Dr. Jauro explained that under Nigerian law, newly established universities are first issued provisional licenses. After three years, they undergo a comprehensive evaluation by NUC to determine eligibility for a permanent license. He noted that Northeastern University scaled through the rigorous process on its very first attempt, a feat he described as unprecedented.
“We felt it was important to present this license first to His Royal Highness, the Emir, in recognition of his unwavering support for the institution. The implication of a permanent license is clear: we have fully met the standards of the NUC, and our doors are firmly open to continue providing quality education,” he stated.
According to him, 12 degree programmes were examined by a team of external experts during the accreditation process, with all securing approval. The results showed the lowest programme score at 84.2 percent, the highest at 99.14 percent, and an overall average of 91.4 percent.
“In my years as a lecturer and administrator, I have never encountered a university scoring such an average in accreditation. This is no mean achievement; it is a landmark for Gombe and for higher education in Nigeria,” Dr. Jauro added.
In his remarks, the Emir of Gombe expressed delight at the development, describing the accreditation as “a source of pride for the people of Gombe State and Nigeria at large.” He commended the management for its commitment to excellence and assured the institution of his continued support as both Chancellor and traditional ruler.
With the permanent license secured, Northeastern University Gombe joins the ranks of fully accredited private universities in the country, further expanding opportunities for higher education in the North-East region.
