LG Chairman, Finance Director Jailed Over N54m Contract Fraud in Kebbi — ICPC

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has secured the conviction of two officials of Sakaba Local Government Area in Kebbi State for contract fraud and abuse of office involving the sum of N54 million.

In a statement signed by the Commission’s spokesperson, Mr. Demola Bakare, fsi, the ICPC said Mr. Abubakar Bawa Makuku, Sole Administrator and Caretaker Chairman of Sakaba Local Government, and Mr. Ahmed Abdullahi Fakai, Director of Finance and Supply, were found guilty by Justice E. Gakko of the Federal High Court sitting in Birnin-Kebbi.

According to the ICPC, the duo was arraigned on multiple counts bordering on abuse of office, fraudulent contract awards, and financial misconduct.

During the trial, prosecution counsel, Mr. Hamza Sani, presented evidence showing that Mr. Fakai unlawfully withdrew a total of N54 million from the council’s bank account in six tranches of N9 million each, to evade financial reporting procedures.

The court also heard that Mr. Makuku corruptly awarded contracts without due process and personally benefited from N10 million earmarked for official engagements of the local government.

Justice Gakko, after reviewing the evidence, found the defendants guilty on all counts. Mr. Fakai was sentenced to three years’ imprisonment or a fine of N2.5 million, while Mr. Makuku received four years’ imprisonment or a fine of N2.5 million, including a N1 million compensation to Sakaba Local Government.

The ICPC noted that the judgment underscores its determination to ensure that public officials who betray public trust are held accountable under the law.

“The Commission remains committed to ensuring transparency, accountability, and justice in public service,” Bakare stated.
