NAWOJ CALLS ON POLITICAL PARTIES TO CARRY FEMALE RUNNING MATES ALONG

The Nigeria’ Association of Women Journalists katsina state council has called on all political parties in the state to select female running mates as better representation will ensure women’s voices are heard and their issues fairly recognized.

This is contained in a statement signed by Hannatu Mohammed, NAWOJ Chairperson Katsina and
Binta I Barange, Secretary.

“Leadership in political and public life are essential to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030 …helps advance gender equality and affects both the range of policy issues that get considered and the types of solutions that are proposed. Research indicates that whether a legislator is male or female has a distinct impact on their policy priorities” the statement added.

NAWOJ said there is need for Gender sensitivity in political offices adding that it is pertinent to promote gender Equality in political leadership in Nigeria, particularly, ahead of 2023 General Elections.

“The role of a woman has changed over generations and looks different in different parts of the world. Their most basic and traditional role has been bearing children, raising them, and managing the household. As time has progressed, more women have become educated and entered the workforce”.

Nawoj strongly appeals to the leadership of political parties to, in the interest of inclusive society and development, consider picking a woman as running mate for the office of vice president and deputy governors of the respective states.

The association commends all political parties in the state for conducting peaceful primary elections, congratulates the Winners, and wish them a more hitch free and successful election in the forthcoming secondary elections.
