NUJ Presidential Hopefuls Celebrate Nigeria’s 64th Independence Anniversary, Pledge Commitment to Journalists’ Welfare

As Nigeria marks its 64th independence anniversary today, Comrade Alhassan Yahya and Dr. Abimbola Oyetunde, leading presidential and deputy presidential candidates of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), have felicitated with Nigerian journalists, honoring the pioneering journalists who fought tirelessly for Nigeria’s independence.

Yahya and Oyetunde, running on the platform of “The Leading Minds & The Patriots Caucus”, reiterated their commitment to upholding the principles of ethical journalism, prioritizing journalists’ welfare, and promoting media excellence.

They envision a union that empowers its members and fosters a culture of transparency and accountability.

“We celebrate the progress we’ve made and reaffirm our dedication to our noble profession,” Yahya stated.

“As we prepare for the NUJ national elections next month in Owerri, Imo State, we pledge to work tirelessly for the interests of journalists nationwide.”

Dr. Oyetunde added, “We draw inspiration from our rich history and look forward to working together towards a brighter future for Nigerian journalism.”

The NUJ, founded in 1955 during Nigeria’s independence struggle, has been a powerful voice for journalists, protecting their rights and promoting ethical standards.

As Nigeria celebrates this milestone, Yahya and Oyetunde urge journalists to reflect on their role in shaping the nation’s narrative and promoting national unity.

“Happy Independence Day, and thank you for your dedication to our noble profession,” they concluded.

The NUJ national elections are scheduled to hold next month in Owerri, Imo State.
