Making health insurance mandatory for all citizens will fast track universal health coverage in Nigeria-Ibrahim Oloriegbe

Chairman, Senate Committee on Health, Ibrahim Oloriegbe, says making health insurance mandatory for all citizens will fast track universal health coverage in Nigeria.

He stated this yesterday in Abuja during a capacity building workshop for National Assembly health committees, organised by the Legislative Initiative for Sustainable Development in collaboration with other partners.

He said to achieve universal health coverage, 80 per cent of vulnerable persons in the country must be covered.

Dr Yusuf Tanko Sununu, Chairman, House Committee on Health Services, said the training was a welcome development.

Dr Francis Ukwuije, a health economist with the World Health Organization, said large healthcare inequality, limited financial protection and poor portability were major challenges towards achieving Universal Health Coverage in Nigeria.
